Clare, 59, from Ealing who learnt with UCanDoIT:
“I had two daughters, a marriage and a happy life, when, at the age of 35, I was stricken by MS. This was a huge blow but I had to cope with it. My family life suffered and my daughters were left more or less to their own devices. I was stuck at home unable to care for myself let alone to work or have a decent social life.
I left school early and did not have proper education or training. I’ve always felt left out and behind so, when I heard about computer training for disabled people in their own homes, I jumped at the opportunity.
I could not afford my own computer so UCanDoIT had a computer delivered to my home. Then a tutor arrived and for the first time in 40 years I was back to schooling - something I thought would never happen again.
Needless to say, it was very hard to grasp the new technology; it all was very scary and alien to me. With the support of my tutor and family, and a bit of willpower, I did continue emailing. There are still many things to learn; I have searched websites and found so many exciting pages to read. I searched the web for holiday offers for disabled people, and was amazed to see actual places with facilities and wheel chair access… It’s fantastic!
I still have a long way to go. I realise that if I want to be in the 21st century I have to change myself in the first instance. I believe I can do it. It is a wonderful opportunity and the experience was a blessing for me. I tell all my friends about UCanDoIT. It’s simply indispensable. “
