"I am an Iranian and came to the UK in 1983, and qualified as a Nursery Nurse working with children with special needs until my sight started to deteriorate. I had lots of paperwork to deal with and this was causing problems, I was struggling to cope with my sight diminishing, and although I loved my job I had to leave with great regret.
Social Services did some assessments and decided that since I am relatively young I could manage with support from my family. I did lots of research and found Guide Software that allows Visually Impaired people to use computers confidently. Later on I discovered UCanDoIT through a magazine and enrolled as a student. I wanted to learn more about computers, especially in my situation. I was looking for more independence, enhanced quality of life, and social contacts and possibly finding some kind of employment. I felt I was still in my prime of life, so I could give more and make full use of my newly acquired skills. In the long term I am thinking of going back to college, and taking some courses
I feel in a way blessed for the opportunity provided by UCanDoIT and the unique way the course is designed - visiting tutor, one to one tuition in my home, tailored curriculum to my own liking. Now I regularly shop online with Tesco and have groceries delivered to my home. I use Skype to talk to friends and family in Australia and New Zealand, Facebook and MSN Messenger to chat and socialise with friends in Iran, America, Australia and Europe. What more could I wish for? "
